The sanitary arrangements in a Norman castle were extremely primitive. The lavatories (or garderobes) were often conveniently placed at an angle opposite the staircase and consisted simply of a shaft built into the thickness of the outer wall. Experience eventually led to the building of small windows to ventilate the tiny rooms. With the domestic facilities being so entirely basic, it is no wonder most noble women seemed to be preoccupied with perfume and flowers! |
